How to I connect wireless from lap-top to desk-top server?

My desk top is cable with road runner. I like to connect my lap-top wireless to it. But I dont want access from desk top to laptop afterwards. Do I bye a chip or how do this work? Maybe I have to have a second account to be able to do this. I dont want to pay double for the service I already have.

If you don’t have one you will need a wireless router. Replace your existing modem with the router and you can connect the desktop by cable and the laptop by wireless. Unless you specifically allow access to the desktop it will not happen. Also equipment which is wifi enabled has it’s own wireless cards fitted.

You need a wireless router. You also need wireless adapter for your desktop and laptop if they are wifi enabled. Then you can form a mini network.

Im not sure what you mean….do you mean you dont want to be able to access files, programs, etc. on the laptop from the main computer? If thats the case, just dont enable any shared files on the laptop. Other users will see an icon with the laptop name, under the network connections, but thats it. Access to any files wont be allowed unless you tell it to, or move files into the shared folders.

You need a router. Just plug the cable that is now coming from the Cable modem into the back of the router and then from the back of the router run another ethernet cable to your computer. You should now be able to get on the internet with your laptop.
